Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais (1904-1984) developed his Method in the late 40’s. He was a mechanical engineer and physicist. He worked with Fredric Jolie-Curie in nuclear research and was the first European to earn a black belt in Judo. When a painful knee injury became chronic and surgery would only give him a 50/50 chance of recovery, he declined. Instead he re-learned how to walk, pain free, by applying his knowledge of physics, engineering and observing athletes, babies and toddlers.
Dr. Feldenkrais (rhymes with rice) developed a hands on process for anyone
wanting to relieve pain and discomfort. It is equally beneficial for people
wanting to improve their posture, flexibility and body awareness.
Anyone--young or old, physically challenged or physically fit--can benefit
from the Method. Feldenkrais is beneficial for those experiencing chronic
or acute pain of the back, neck, shoulder, hip, legs or knee, as well as for
healthy individuals who wish to enhance their self-image. The Method has been
very helpful in dealing with central nervous system conditions such as multiple
sclerosis, cerebral palsy, and stroke. Musicians, actors and artists can extend
their abilities and enhance creativity. Many seniors enjoy using it to retain
or regain their ability to move without strain or discomfort. Through lessons
in this method you can enjoy greater ease of movement, an increased sense
of vitality, and feelings of peaceful relaxation. After a session you often
feel taller and lighter, breathe more freely and find that your discomforts
have eased. You experience relaxation, and feel more centered and balanced.
With you lying on a low padded table wearing comfortable clothes, the practitioner
uses slow, gentle movement, to teach you to relax your muscles and release
any tension. She then conveys the experience of comfort and ease of movement
while you learn how to reorganize your body in new and more expanded functional
motor patterns. Your central nervous system will be re-educated allowing repetitive
and old habits to change.
